10 Mar The Moveable Feast
When I heard that the familiar Rafiki’s in Tamboerskloof Cape Town was closing down I was immediately intrigued to find out who or what was going to replace the renowned space.
And then I heard that the guys taking it over are the same fellas who own one of my favourite bars on Kloof Nek, The Power and the Glory – already 10 points in my book.
Being a local in the area, I was too excited when I received the invite to try out this new French-inspired eatery by the name of The Moveable Feast.
In a nutshell, this bistro slash bar boasts a beautiful menu influenced by Parisian flavours and style, offering traditional dishes like Soup A’ L’Oignon, Poisson En Croute De Sel and Apple Tarte Fine. The fashion of the cafe was created to mix the conventional elements of a French bistro with a modern twist.
So, think Vegan Gnocchi for dinner paired with a post-meal bar drink alongside a live piano player. Another 10 points checked.
We were treated to an exceptional meal which included a bottle of local Asana wine, two starters and two mains.
To begin, my husband I enjoyed the Moules Gratinees and a custom-made Tomato & Watermelon Salad. Being predominantly vegetarian, I absolutely adored the salad. It was unbelievably fresh and served alongside fresh mint, basil, thyme, red onion and croutons.
The gratinated mussels are served with cream cheese, garlic and breadcrumbs, a pleasantly surprising and light combination. I must add that they cleaned the mussels beautifully before serving the protein in the shells, a really thoughtful touch.
For mains, my husband was served pork belly served alongside a fresh lentil, tomato and carrot salad. I indulged in a satisfying vegan green curry served with broccoli, soy protein and crispy sourdough bread. To be honest, when the meal arrived rice-less, I thought I would miss the standard grain base, but having it served with a slice of toast instead was really a lovely, delicate addition.
The Moveable Feast treated us with a special evening and I will definitely return in the near future, whether it’s for a glass of wine at the bar or a candle-lit dinner in the bistro. And plus, there’s at least another five dishes I need to try!
